Compost

Compost and Composting

Composting is a practice of making humus like organic material by mixing the organic stuffs.
Organic matter or organic material means a matter that can be decomposed.

Such as, we can create compost by mixing remaining parts of vegetables, tree leaves, grass, cowdung, straw, wood chips and so on.
But matters that need be avoided are:
  1. Meat scraps.
  2. Cat droppings.
  3. Plastic and glass ( because they can not be decomposed).
  4. Heavy metals.
We must remember that these mixing should be in aerobic condition and the decay must occur outside of the soil. Soggy condition make our compost bad smelling, poor nutrient status, production of methane.
Our compost will be high quality when the decomposition will occur:
  •  Slowly.
  •  At normal temperature.
  •  In the presence of earthworms.
Earthworm can transform our compost to vermicompost which is more effective and nutrient rich. Today we will only see pictures of compost.

Just look, there are maggots at the first picture. The maggots came from the eggs of flies. Don't think there in only four maggots.
Thousands of maggots came out when I broke my compost. Observe closely and you will see many of them in side that crack.
I am sorry that i could not take some more pictures. There was an unbearable smell of decomposing and it was very tough for me to stand there.

In my next post, i will discuss the mechanism of decomposing.
