Advantages of using compost

In this post we will know the advantages of using compost in our land.

For part II

We can replace our chemical fertilizer with compost because it is natural and is made without any involvement of chemical substances.

First of all compost can supply sufficient nitrogen to plants thereby reducing the plant nitrogen deficiency. Initially in compost the C/N ratio is very high which is nearly 40:1 because at the beginning we add fresh organic residues.

As a result of CO2 losses and settling, the volume of composted organic materials decreases by about 30 to 50% during composting process. The resulting material may greatly ease the handling of the organic matter as a soil amendment.

It provides a means of safely storing organic materials with a minimum of odor release until it is convenient to apply them to soils.

High temperatures during the thermophilic stage in well managed compost piles kill most weed seeds and pathogenic organisms in a matter of a few days.

Toxic compounds in the organic wastes are destroyed by the time the compost is considered mature and ready to use.

We can use compost as a method of biological treatment of polluted soils.

Comosts can effectively suppress soilborne plant diseases by encouraging microbial antagonisms.

Our compost will reduce the loss of nitrogen through leaching.

It releases nutrients over time.

It increases infiltration and permeability of heavy soils.

It improves water holding capacity, soil structure, porosity.

It improves the chemical properties of soils by improving cation exchange capacity, stabilizing soil pH.

In my next post, i will share my experiment with you about the beneficial effects of compost on plants.
